A Healthy Disregard for Awkward Facts
It's title is taken from one of Iain M. Bank's Culture novels (the name of a Mind or GSV) and inspired by Bacon's screaming men. I can tell already that my partner is not in its favour. It is true, there is a certain amount of disquiet, and unease. After all, it is a man screaming. And yet, this man inspires me by his refusal to remain silent in the face of something that needs to be screamed at - and how often today, does silence, silence about what matters, pervade where a voice is needed? I would like to have his strength of refusal in the face of what must be refused; and yet, even as he screams, he remains reasoned and dignified. He screams from a deep humanity. He screams with compassion. He reminds me that silence is not an option. It is time to give our humanity back its voice. Even if all we can muster is a scream.
In this, I am reminded not only of what it means to be human, but that one can retain one's humanity in the most demanding of life's moments.
